“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

"I do not regard flesh food as necessary for us. I hold flesh food to be unsuited to our species. To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body. The more helpless the creature, the more it is entitled to protection from humans from the cruelty of humans." ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi

The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot." ~ Mark Twain

"I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it. The pains which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity towards it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further." ~ Mark Twain (1899)

“People eat meat and think they will become as strong as an ox, forgetting that the ox eats grass." ~ Pino Caruso

People's general awareness is getting much better, even down to buying a pint of milk: the fact that the calves are actually killed so that the milk doesn't go to them but to us cannot really be right, and if you have seen a cow in a state of extreme distress because it cannot understand why its calf isn't by, it can make you think a lot." ~ Kate Bush

"If the use of animal food be, in consequence, subversive to the peace of human society, how unwarrantable is the injustice and the barbarity which is exercised toward these miserable victims. They are called into existence by human artifice that they may drag out a short and miserable existence of slavery and disease, that their bodies may be mutilated, their social feelings outraged. It were much better that a sentient being should never have existed, than that it should have existed only to endure unmitigated misery" ~ Shelley

"Never again may blood of bird or beast, stain with its venomous stream a human feast." ~ Shelley

"150 years ago, they would have thought you were absurd if you advocated for the end of slavery. 100 years ago, they would have laughed at you for suggesting that women should have the right to vote. 50 years ago, they would object to the idea of African Americans receiving equal rights under the law. 25 years ago they would have called you a pervert if you advocated for gay rights. "Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes - by the million in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This, in turn, kills man by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year sends out cards praying for "Peace on Earth." - from Old MacDonald's Factory Farm by C. David Coats

"We know that all meat-eaters are terrorists." ~ Chrissie Hynde

“A human body in no way resembles those that were born for ravenousness; it hath no hawk’s bill, no sharp talon, no roughness of teeth, no such strength of stomach or heat of digestion, as can be sufficient to convert or alter such heavy and fleshy fare. But if you will contend that you were born to an inclination to such food as you have now a mind to eat, do you then yourself kill what you would eat. But do it yourself, without the help of a chopping-knife, mallet or axe, as wolves, bears, and lions do, who kill and eat at once. Rend an ox with thy teeth, worry a hog with thy mouth, tear a lamb or a hare in pieces, and fall on and eat it alive as they do. But if thou had rather stay until what thou eat is to become dead, and if thou art loath to force a soul out of its body, why then dost thou against nature eat an animate thing? There is nobody that is willing to eat even a lifeless and a dead thing even as it is; so they boil it, and roast it, and alter it by fire and medicines, as it were, changing and quenching the slaughtered gore with thousands of sweet sauces, that the palate being thereby deceived may admit of such uncouth fare.” ~ Plutarch

"Murderers very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids." ~ Robert K. Ressler, FBI Serial Killer Profiler

"The animal liberation movement is saying that where animals and humans have similar interests - we might take the interest in avoiding physical pain as an example, for it is an interest that humans clearly share with other animals - those interests are to be counted equally, with no automatic discount just because one of the beings is not human." ~ Peter Singer, Australian Animal Activist

In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for the animals it is an eternal Treblinka." ~ Isaac Bashevis Singer, writer and Nobel laureate (1902–1991)

"Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other." ~ Louis J. Camuti, D.V.M., First American vet to devote his practice exclusively to cats.

"The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men." ~ from a fiction novel written by Dimitri Merejkowski entitled, The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci. Sometimes attributed to Leonardo!

"Man and the animals are merely a passage and channel for food, a tomb for other animals, a haven for the dead, giving life by the death of others, a coffer full of corruption." ~ Leonardo da Vinci. (from "Codice Atlantico 76")

"If one of the arguments against eating meat is to do with cruelty and animal intelligence, then lab meat avoids that. There's also the environmental argument for it." Margaret Atwood.

“One farmer says to me, ‘You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with;’ and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals, as surely as the savage tribes have left off eating each other.

"You shouldn't run around killing people or eating meat. That's not what we mean by tantra. There's no need to break the rules." Frederick Lenz.

"I think if you're against cruelty and you look at what happens to animals in slaughterhouses and on factory farms, you have to be completely against eating meat." Ingrid Newkirk.

"I grew up in Texas, eating meat five times a day, and I liked meat. But I began being a vegetarian when I was 19 because I found that I felt better." Dean Ornish.

"I rebelled against the Mormon Church by going to other churches. I rebelled against my parents by not eating meat. I rebelled against my friends and myself by doing drugs. And I rebelled against everything that was holding me down by playing music with these guys." Bert McCracken.

"Well it's true, ever since I stopped eating meat I feel a lot better among animals, I feel I can be much more honest when I pat a dog." Leonard Cohen.

"Eating meat is primitive, barbaric, and arrogant." Ingrid Newkirk.

"Eating meat is not your personal decision, any more than, you know, whether somebody beats their child is their personal decision." Bruce Friedrich.

"To avoid causing terror to living beings, let the disciple refrain from eating meat... the food of the wise is that which is consumed by the sadhus [holymen]; it does not consist of meat... There may be some foolish people in the future who will say that I permitted meat-eating and that I partook of meat myself, but... meat-eating I have not permitted to anyone, I do not permit, I will not permit meat-eating in any form, in any manner and in any place; it is unconditionally prohibited for all." Gautama Buddha.

"The eating of meat extinguishes the seed of great compassion." Gautama Buddha.

"Initially, my decision to stop eating meat was motivated by fear of spiritual consequences, but right away I found that not eating meat made me feel good about myself. It increased my self-esteem, which I found so rewarding, I wanted to do more." Steve-O.

"Good Viking genes, being vegan and having rowdy dogs and kids definitely keep me in shape. Not eating meat gives me the energy I need to keep up with work, family and travel - I'm very active." Pamela Anderson.

"The meat industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars lying to the public about their product. But no amount of false propaganda can sanitize meat. The facts are absolutely clear: Eating meat is bad for human health, catastrophic for the environment, and a living nightmare for animals" Chrissie Hynde.

"Eating meat is a leftover of the greatest brutality [killing]; the transition to veg(etari)anism is the first and most natural consequence of enlightenment." Leo Tolstoy.

"Not eating meat is a decision, eating meat is an instinct." Denis Leary.

"Eating meat and drinking liquor are demonic vices. Those indulging in drink lose all sense of propriety, have no compassion or love and become demons." Sathya Sai Baba.

"We need never look for universal peace on this earth until men stop killing animals for food. "There are many activities that human beings have been doing "forever." We might argue from that perspective that eating meat should be allowed to continue. Men have been raping women for thousands of years; does that mean that it is normal and should be allowed to continue?" Sharon Gannon.

"Do I observe holy days and holidays? Yeah, the ritual is very important to me. It's part of being Ukrainian Catholic. So every holy day we're baking pierogis and not eating meat." Vera Farmiga.

But for some reason-force of habit, cultural norms, resistance to change-there is a fundamental disconnect whereby these feelings do' translate into changes of behavior." Brian Greene.

"Take pandemics. There could easily be a severe pandemic. A lot of that comes from something we don't pay much attention to: Eating meat. The meat production industry, the industrial production of meat, uses an immense amount of antibiotics. We're now running out of antibiotics that deal with the threat of rapidly mutating bacteria. A lot of that just comes from the meat production industry. Well, do we worry about it? Well, we ought to be." Noam Chomsky

"Almost always when I told someone I was writing a book about "eating animals", they assumed, even without knowing anything about my views, that it was a case for vegetarianism. It's a telling assumption, one that implies not only that a thorough inquiry into animal agriculture would lead one away from eating meat, but that most people already know that to be the case." Jonathan Safran Foer.

"If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty." Paul McCartney.

"I do not like eating meat because I have seen lambs and pigs killed. I saw and felt their pain. They felt the approaching death. I could not bear it. I cried like a child. I ran up a hill and could not breathe. I felt that I was choking. I felt the death of the lamb." Vaslav Nijinsky.

"Whether it's the Axis of Evil, or the evils of eating meat, it is a concept that has all but lost the impact it once had, because everyone thinks different things in this world are evil. PETA thinks what we do to animals is evil, but I think their overzealous approach is evil. Evil, in more ways than one, is comparable to the truth: definitions vary from one individual to the next." Corey Taylor.

"Just for a few tiny buds on your tongue you are killing live animals, with no sensitivity, with no awareness, with no love. It seems impossible; how can a man who has known love be capable of doing such things? A man who loves his wife, who loves his children goes on eating meat? Impossible." Rajneesh.

"Our ancestors were eating meat over 2.5 million years ago. We mainly ate meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and nuts. We have to assume our physiology evolved in association with this diet. The balanced diet for our species was what we could acquire then, not what the government and doctors tell us to eat now." Lionel Tiger.

"I'm close to being a vegan, but I'm not one, technically. I don't eat eggs, or nearly any dairy - no cheese or milk. I do eat honey, and a piece of milk chocolate here and there. It's never really been that hard for me. I've never had any desire to eat meat. In fact, when I was a kid I would have a really difficult time eating meat at all. It had to be the perfect bite, with no fat or gristle or bone or anything like that. I don't judge people who eat meat - that's not for me to say - but the whole thing just sort of bums me out." Tobey Maguire.

"Throughout my work, my subjects are being told that they must change their diet in order to make the adjustment into the new world. Our bodies must become lighter, and this means the elimination of heavy foods. During the sessions, my clients are repeatedly warned to stop eating meat (beef and pork especially), mainly because of the additives and chemicals that are being fed into the animals." Dolores Cannon.

"Melancholy had crept inside me. Small children made me cry, I got depressed eating meat, old book bindings awakened tenderness in me. Everything was disintegrating. Nothing stood the test of time, including me. Somewhere on the other shore were madness and God, sometimes both wearing a beard. Neither instilled much confidence." Mati Unt.

"We stopped eating meat many years ago. During the course of a Sunday lunch we happened to look out of the kitchen window at our young lambs playing happily in the fields. Glancing down at our plates, we suddenly realized that we were eating the leg of an animal who had until recently been playing in a field herself. We looked at each other and said, "Wait a minute, we love these sheep-they're such gentle creatures. So why are we eating them?" It was the last time we ever did." Linda McCartney.

"By eating meat we share the responsibility of climate change, the destruction of our forests, and the poisoning of our air and water. The simple act of becoming a vegetarian will make a difference in the health of our planet." Nhat Hanh.

"Great and good men and women stirred sugar into their coffee knowing that it had been picked by slaves. Kind, good ancestors of all of us never questioned hangings, burnings, tortures, inequality, suffering and injustice that today revolt us. If we dare to presume to damn them with our fleeting ideas of morality, then we risk damnation from our descendants for whatever it is that we are doing that future history will judge as intolerable and wicked: eating meat, driving cars, appearing on TV, visiting zoos, who knows?" Stephen Fry.

"When we hunt or fish, we deliberately kill a defenseless being who wishes us no harm. This is a direct violation of the First Precept. It is absolutely forbidden to Buddhists. As to eating meat, we know that the only way we can obtain it is for an animal to be killed. Therefore, when we eat meat, it is our intent that an innocent animal should die to satisfy our addiction to flesh. And that underlying intention, no matter how well hidden behind a smokescreen of rationalizations will block the growth of compassion and create negative karma." Norm Phelps.

"The SAD diet - (the Standard American Diet) - can only make you sad. Eating meat and dairy products is the SAD diet. It causes heart disease, cancer, diabetes and makes you fat. Raising animals for food destroys the environment. And those animals are not happy - they are enslaved and live humiliating, fearful lives of abuse and tremendous suffering. Billons are murdered every year. That's a lot of suffering - all for no good reason. Veganism turns sadness into joy - Simple Recipes for Joy!" Sharon Gannon.

"I just could not stand the idea of eating meat - I really do think that it has made me calmer.... People's general awareness is getting much better, even down to buying a pint of milk: the fact that the calves are actually killed so that the milk doesn't go to them but to us cannot really be right, and if you have seen a cow in a state of extreme distress because it cannot understand why its calf isn't by, it can make you think a lot." Kate Bush.

“I'm sorry to any of you if you feel that I've guilt tripped you about how you live your lives. The truth is, the way I view the world and the way you view the world are two completely different things.
When you use your Dove deodorant, I don't just smell something pleasant. I see rabbits covered in sores, eyes bulging, hardly able to move with pain. I see monkeys so desperate to rub their eyes but shackled in cages, unable to reach. I see beagles with cage madness, circling day in, day out, still wagging at passers by in the hopes that someone might spare them.
When you upload your pictures of trips to the zoo, I don't see family fun. I see baby animals being stolen from the wild, their parents killed, being forced into domestication so that people can get "educated" on "wildlife". I see animals so depressed that they have to go on medication to keep them from going insane. I see a prison.
When you show me your new leather jacket, I don't just see a stylish item of clothing. I see a cow being forced to walk miles and miles across a hot desert, being deprived of food and water, having chilli pepper rubbed in their eyes if they dare to slow down. I then hear them scream as their skin is taken off with a blunt knife, whilst they're still very conscious. I see their friends watching helplessly, terrified about their own fate.
When you show me your new hat with the little fur pom pom, I don't see anything cute or trendy at all. I see foxes being born into cages that are so small that they're unable to turn around. I hear them screaming as the metal prod is inserted into their anuses, as they're electrocuted. I see them struggle to move, once their skin has finally been removed.
When you eat eggs or products with that even contain egg, I don't see a yummy or nutritious treat. I see male chicks going down a conveyor belt and ending up straight in a grinder, or even being emptied into trash bags and being left to suffocate. I see mothers mass producing egg after egg, in so much pain that their uterus has prolapsed but still being expected to lay. I can see them being loaded up into trucks as they're sent to the slaughterhouse at just over a year old, purely for not producing enough eggs.
When you get milk in your coffee or eat a cheese sandwich, I don't see this as you getting your lunch. I see tiny calves being torn from their mothers, literally as they're first born. I hear the scream of the mother as she struggles to fight for her child, milk still dripping from her teats. I see her being raped, year after year after year. And I see her child, too. I see a male calf, being sent to auction at barely a week old, then being shot in the head to become veal.
And of course, when you eat an animal in my presence, it goes without saying that I don't see an item of food. I see a being. I see a face. I see a presence. I see the corpse of someone very smart, very unique and someone who desperately did want to live. It doesn't matter whether you're eating a fish, a chicken, a turkey, a duck, a pig, a cow or a lamb... They are all the same to me.
This is why I am always posting, trying to raise awareness. This is why I am the way I am. It isn't because YOU are a bad person, it is because my eyes have been opened and unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to close them”. - Mary Nesbitt Larking

"Until man extends his circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace." ~ Albert Schweitzer

"To consider yourself an environmentalist and still eat meat is like saying you're a philanthropist who doesn't give to charity." ~ Howard Lyman, former cattle rancher, now Animal Rights and Environmental Activist

Despite, as one person told me; "he reminds me of Tony Blair with all those pointy hand gestures", too many, worryingly, weird "followers" and, disappointingly for me ('cos I so wanted him not to), losing a debate with the more prepared "welfarists", it still seems fitting that a present day abolitionist philosopher have a say...

“Being vegan is easy. Are there social pressures that encourage you to continue to eat, wear, and use animal products? Of course there are. But in a patriarchal, racist, homophobic, and ableist society, there are social pressures to participate and engage in sexism, racism, homophobia, and ableism. At some point, you have to decide who you are and what matters morally to you. And once you decide that you regard victimizing vulnerable nonhumans is not morally acceptable, it is easy to go and stay vegan” ~ Gary L. Francione

"People speak sometimes about the "bestial" cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as man, so artfully, so artistically cruel." ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
